Gembrook Hill Vineyard + The Wanderer Wines

Ian and June Marks founded Gembrook Hill in 1983, making them some of the early adopters in the renaissance of the Yarra Valley. Importantly, they chose a cool site, some would have said marginal back then, to plant vines. In an area perhaps more seen as sparkling wine territory, that vision has been rewarded handsomely. With a warming climate and changing tastes, the Upper Yarra is now arguably the most prime of territory.

The Wanderer wines launched as a passion project of Yarra Valley vigneron, Andrew Marks, heir apparent to the beloved Gembrook Hill Vineyard situated in the Upper Yarra Valley.

Andrew named the wine after his fanatical curiosity to step outside of his family owned vineyard. In 06’ Andrew left home to study the art of Burgundy in Puligny Montrachet with ‘Etienne Sauzet’ and more recently over 10 vintages in the Costa Brava, Spain producing mesmerising small batch Carignan tagged ‘El Wanderer’.

Andrew is also now the winemaker at Gembrook Hill. He worked for many years "hand in glove" with Yarra Valley Icon Timo Mayer and since the passing of his father he has taken on the role of viticulturalist and winemaker at Gembrook Hill.

Whether you explore the Gembrook Hill Range or Andrew's The Wanderer" Wines...it is hard not to notice the exceptional quality of these hand-made wines. Finesse and attention to detail are the hallmarks of these wines.

It’s hard to not ignore the unique sensitivity, care and attention to detail that leaps out of the glass. The entire range displays a high-calibre of finesse, complexity and elegance that comes from a genuine aforethought minimalistic approach to achieve the best expressions of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah. Present day, he has amassed a cult-like following whilst firmly planting his legacy of world class releases across Australia and Internationally.

Andrew has been a Young Gun Of Wine Finalist in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
