Winner of the Regional Trophy (Yarra Valley) in the recent Halliday Chardonnay Challenge. It is unsurprising because this is a stunning example of Yarra Valley Chardonnay. Mature vineyard Chardonnays are just next level wines. All the nuance and complexity that comes with mature fruit, makes for a significantly better wine.
Each of the three Chardonnays are incredible examples. But this Willow Lake Chardonnay was that bit more opulent in the glass at tasting. Grapefruit and struck match fill the bowl of the glass with the vaguest aroma of gun flint minerality hiding at back. Super pleasant to experience. Minerality is the signature of this wine. The flavours are mainly in the citrus spectrum, mainly grapefruit backed by soft pillowy acids that create this creamy sensation. But the underlying feature is oyster shell minerality, flowing across the palate. I have to admit this wine is just "yummy". It goes for days.
The 2021 Willowlake has taken out the Yarra Valley Regional Trophy in the James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge (after winning the National Title with the '17 vintage).
