This would have to be the most eagerly anticipated red wine release of the 2019 Vintage. You only have to look for Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier at retail, everything back to the 2013 Vintage is sold out.

Apart from being Clonakilla’s 50th year (not bad for a Family business – support local), the 2019 is something different…different good.

Instead of 12 months in oak, Tim Kirk left the 2019 in oak for 18 months due to “Covid” (possibly one of the only positives to come out of 2020) normally the release is in October each year but this year the 2019 vintage was released in April.

The yields were 20% down in 2019, so the fruit intensity is through the roof.
Sadly, due to the fires in 2020, there will be no 2020 vintage release this October.

How does it taste?
Campbell Mattinson of the Winefront has had the opportunity to review the wine before release and has offered the following:

Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier 2019
"It spent 18 months in oak, rather than its usual 12. Oak’s presence in the wine is no more than usual, if anything it simply feels more harmonious.
In any case this is a wonderful release. It leaps from the glass with wonder on its lips. Plums and florals and spices and meats take a walk through a garden, woodsmoke suggested, summer alive. It’s elegant and refined and yet it’s all there, it’s all open.
It gets you in the feels; it has a kind of satiny confidence, like it knows that it’s good and it knows that you’ve noticed. Fine fingers of tannin, curry leaf notes, berries.
Florals here as mentioned but maybe not as pronounced as usual, as if viognier and shiraz have become one. Still, there’s nothing reserved about this wine. Nothing. It’s just all there, ready, perfect."

Reasons why you should consider spending $115 on this particular wine:
1. It’s amazing and a rare production – likely Tim will return to a 12mo Oak regime.
2. Do you have a child born in 2019? I could think of nothing better than sitting down to a bottle of this in 2040 – it will go the distance.
3. It is a perfect gift for a celebration or to say thank you.
4. If you already drink Clonakilla, there is none about so fill your boots…
5. There is no 2020 vintage.
6. Support local, Clonakilla among other wineries in Murrumbateman took a massive economic hit due to the fires and Covid-19. Every little counts.

Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier as a wine speaks for itself, it is one of Australia’s top wines for good reason. If you collect Clonakilla, you know this.

If you have never tried Clonakilla, you should…each bottle of Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier I have enjoyed has left me with a significant memory of the wine and enjoying it with friends. Very few wines have done that.
