There are some wines you wait for each year beacuse you know they are consistently good and will deliver loads of pleasure. Giant Steps Yarra Valley Pinot Noir is one of those wines. Steve Flamsteed provides consistency year in and year out. Admittedly vintage variation does occur, but the consistency of sheer drinking pleasure remains.
Light red in colour, this vintage has a real earthy mushroomy (might I say "sous-bois") note to it, then sneaking out from the forest are the slightest notes of raspberries and rich cherry.
The palate is a delight. Once upon a time this wine sold for less than $30 and it was value for money. With time and inflation the price of this wine is $36 and in my mind it is still very much value for money. Layers of rich red fruit burst from the palate, there is a bit going on here so expect the flavours to evolve over time...buy a dozen and enjoy the ride. Plums and raspberries delight and are wrapped in nice tight tannins. The finish is long and dry. The balance is there and so is my smile.
Don't wait and miss out.
"Hand-picked from the usual assortment of Giant Steps vineyards across the Yarra Valley.
Red fruit, spice, a little pepper, something of a blood orange/Campari character too. It’s slightly sappy, red cherry and spiced strawberry, again that blood orange flavour and some savoury ‘autumnal’ character. Tannin has light emery grip, and the finish is juicy/sweet/sour and slightly bitter, offering solid length. Good drink. Better again with a little more time in bottle."
