Piedmont in Italy is famous for amazing Nebbiolo wines. Most of them are known as Barolo and Barbaresco and some even feature on the worlds most collected lists.
But Nebbiolo is difficult and puts a lot of red wine drinkers off.
Trying to understand your Barolo from your Barbaresco or Langhe, then comparing winemaking techniques...without any proper guidance it can leave you with a very expensive bottle of wine you don't like.
That isn't good for anyone.
Luckily quite a few Australian winemakers have ventured to Piedmont and have brought back knowledge and experience.
Combine that with some incredible quality fruit and Australia produces some fantastic Nebbiolos. And we call them...Nebbiolo. Easy.
On that note ...wouldn't it be great to have a Nebbiolo box that allows you to sample some really good Nebbiolo from "entry level to great wine"?
That's what we did...and for $240 its yours. Six fabulous Nebbiolos & Nebbiolo Blends, luckily Nebbiolo plays nicely with other grapes. A bit of fun and some straight forward great Nebbiolo.
The lineup is:
Fletcher Wines "The Minion" Nebbiolo 2020 - We are huge fans of Dave Fletcher (former Winemaker at Ceretto in Piedmont now producing his own wines in the Barbaresco Train Station). His wines show that you can drink great Nebbiolo quite young, and the Minion is just gluggable.
Protero Nebbiolo 2019 - Steve Pannells second vintage from the Gumeracha Vineyard (Adelaide Hills) under the Protero label. Probably the best value Nebbiolo on the market and a serious benchmark for other Nebbiolo.
SC Pannell Adelaide Hills Nebbiolo 2016 - Five years old and glorious, this is the last vintage of SC Pannell Nebbiolo before it is released as the Protero "Capo" Nebbiolo. I was lucky enough to try some of Steve's earlier Nebbiolos from when he started making Nebbiolo over 15 years ago and they were sublime, this last vintage will continue to impress for years.
Denton Nebbiolo 2017 - Just exquisite, showing off the classic tar & roses perfume and so much more. Richly textured with amazing red fruit and seamless tannins.
Little Reddie New! Colbinabbin Nebbiolo Refosco 2021 - Pat Underwood likes to be a little different and playful with his Nebbiolo, in this wine he has blended Nebbiolo with a small amount of Refosco to make a fun juicy and very gluggable red. And if you think this one is good, you should try his Sparkling Nebbiolo...one fo the best Sparkling Whites I have tried this year.
Ravensworth Hilltops Barbera + Nebbiolo 2021 - Bryan Martin knows how to make great wine and his straight Nebbiolo (when he makes it) is something to behold. But he likes to mix things up and in this case a blend of Barbera and Nebbiolo. Taking the fun juicy summer drinking Barbera and giving it some structure, texture and florals. Genius.
Six great wines for your drinking pleasure, perfect for Christmas or as a Christmas gift.
