This is the sort of Orange/Amber wine that makes you wonder why you are not drinking more Orange/Amber Wine. This is a true delight. A mix of mainly Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Riesling and a touch of Muscat. Whole bunch ferment for 3 weeks on skins then time in old barrels and clay amphora. Think herbal tea notes combined with orange liqueur (Amaro/Campari) and rich fruit flavours driving the bus backed by wonderful herby peppery spice. Tannins are there and they make the wine. Have this baby with food.
From the Winemaker:
Luminous peach/ copper hue, with a reassuring, organic, light haze. Lifted floral aromas leap out of the glass along with orange rind and an earthy complexity. Lovely fine phenolics fill the mouth giving great weight and a moreish texture to the wine. Orange rind, Campari/ Negroni like flavours follow. A great wine to accompany a variety of tapas-style foods.
"A paean to the previous owners of Pyramid Valley, Mike and Claudia Weersing; legends of NZ wine and such wonderful people. A skin contact Pinot Gris here, unfined, unfiltered, with minimal sulphur. Lipton Ice peach tea, orange rind and Japanese pickled ginger, slightly musky, dusty and peppery. Juicy peach and apricot flavours with a layer of spice and gentle nutty umami character, subtle white pepper tannin, a freshening juicy orange tang, and a perfumed finish of excellent length. It’s a clean, refreshing and beautifully turned out version of orange wine, and lovely to drink. I’m going to guzzle it."
