Te Mata Estate Bullnose Syrah 2018 - Hawkes Bay, New ZealandRegular price $75.00
Magic. Only way to describe this wine, the bottle is opened and it miraculously disappears! If I were to say the nose was redolent with red fruit and exotics spices I would be making a gross understatement. Flavour and perfume leaps from the glass. The Bullnose is made in a classic Rhone style. Rich fruit on the palate, raspberries, blackberries and even roasted beetroot then packed with loads of white pepper. This is great wine.
"I’ve tasted a few in the interim, but no reviews since the 2014.In terms of red wines from NZ, I rate both Cabernet blends and Shiraz more highly than I do Pinot Noir.
Ras el hanout (راس الحانوت) is a spice mix that means ‘head of the shop’, and maybe we have a bull in a shop here, such is the level of exotic spice and perfume pumping out of the glass. In with that, some lavender and vanilla, cherry and redcurrant, a smattering of green herb too. It’s light to medium-bodied, fine emery tannin, juicy raspberry acidity and flavour, inner-mouth perfume and spiced wood aromatic, and a dusty white pepper texture and taste on a cool long finish. Nice and ‘minerally’ too. You have to like them spicy and lithe, and if so, this’ll be close to the top of the shop for you."
