Torzi Matthews 1920 Vineyard Shiraz 2019Regular price $68.00
Dominic Torzi has collaborated with his 15yo son Marcus to make this, his first wine. If Marcus Torzi had significant input into making this wine…then the boy definitely has a future.
Responsible farming methods using biodynamic practices. 50/50 whole bunch/whole berry. Natural ferment in open vats then Basket Pressed into 100% New French Oak.
Dark as pitch in colour. Wow what a nose, aromas of plums tobacco, bramble, violets, earthy notes and vague charcuterie.
The palate is dense and intense, there is a spiciness in the backdrop. This is the whole fruit platter of purple, red and black fruit. There is blackberry, raspberries, blueberry, mulberry then hits of dark chocolate. Mouthcoating and silky there are some fine savoury tannins that take you all the way to a very length finish.
Warning: You will race your drinking companions to the bottom of this bottle.
First wine made by Dom Torzi with his son, Marcus. 100% new oak. 50% whole bunch. 1,500 bottles made.
Gee, this is rich and luscious. Almost to tiramisu or Black Forest cake, all the nutmeg and baking spices, sweet black fruit, liquorice, raspberry liqueur, coffee, with a little earth. It’s full-bodied, plush and neatly packed with cocoa-like tannin, a little sage and mint in the mix, shows freshness despite its scale, and finishes with dry grip and more savoury saline/iodine flavours and powdery tannin. It’s a bold one. Needs time.
